Mahmudullah, an all-rounder who bats in the middle order and bowls accurate offspin, has spent the last three years learning how unstable form can be. He was close to become captain when he was the star who led West Indies to their first ODI series loss in Bangladesh in late 2012. After a disappointing season, his status was often called into doubt, and he was even benched for the 2014 Asia Cup. Mahmudullah took another five months to find his form and eventually became a given.

He made his one-day international debut against Sri Lanka in 2007 and for a while was known as a limited-overs specialist. He performed well in spurts but didn’t exactly light the globe on fire. However, his eight-wicket haul in his Test debut against the West Indies in 2009 (including a five-for in the second innings) inspired him, and later that year he averaged 193 with the bat in the ODI tri-series against India and Sri Lanka.

It got better when he scored his lone international century in a one-off Test match in Hamilton against New Zealand. As he imperiously smashed the fast bowlers through the covers, the fans held their breath as he briefly drew comparisons to India’s VVS Laxman. The 159 runs he scored against the West Indies during the home ODI series in 2012 are his most notable accomplishment to date. In addition to winning the game, he was keeping the innings together. The following two years were challenging, but with a respectable showing against Zimbabwe in the 2014 winter, he was assured of a spot in the 2015 World Cup squad.
