Father of Soumya was a teacher. Soumya was inspired by his father to become a teacher, but his talent and passion for the game led him to chose cricket as a vocation. In the 2010 and 2012 Under-19 World Cups, he participated. In the 2010–11 season, he made his First-Class debut for Khulna Division against Dhaka Division.

He and his colleague Mohammad Shahid made their test debuts against Pakistan on April 28, 2015, at Khulna. In two innings, he scored 66 runs altogether. On April 24, 2015, Sarkar made his Twenty20 International debut for Bangladesh versus Pakistan. He failed to score even one run during the game, though.
