Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly welcomed Sourav Ganguly (now 48) into the world on July 8, 1972 in Calcutta (modern-day Kolkata), India. His father had a successful print company and was one of the wealthiest men in the city. His father, who was 73 years old, passed away on February 21, 2013, following a protracted illness. Football was Sourav Ganguly’s first sport of choice because it is the city of Kolkata’s favorite, but he eventually became interested in cricket. His mother, however, was not a big fan of him choosing sports as a vocation.

He was promptly benched since his attitude toward the game was openly criticized and he was thought to be “arrogant.” Additionally, it was reported that Sourav Ganguly said it was not his responsibility to carry beverages for his teammates and later rejected the claims. He was thus kicked from the team.

The decision was made as a result of Tendulkar resigning from the post owing to health reasons, and Sourav Ganguly serving as vice captain at the time. His first series as captain against South Africa in a five-match one-day series was successful, and he also took India to the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy finals where New Zealand upset the Men in Blue.

Then a series started, which turned out to be Sourav Ganguly’s and Indian cricket’s turning point. Australia was the current world champion at the time, therefore any team’s chances of beating them seemed remote. Sourav Ganguly led India in 2001 when they ended Australia’s string of 16 straight test match victories. Another highlight of Sourav Ganguly’s career was during the Natwest Series, when India defeated England in an ODI at Lord’s and he waved his T-shirt from the Lord’s balcony. It was a reaction to Andrew Flintoff’s swaying of his T-shirt at Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium.
